Rick Gillan delivers vision and innovation to projects, businesses and people by employing his decades of experience in engineering, hidden natural capital development, and management. He has a talent for transforming complex projects into manageable and profitable outcomes for the stakeholders and the environment.
As General Manager for the largest reclamation company in North America, Mr. Gillan led the design and implementation of several key equipment and process innovations that have yielded better efficiency, plant establishment and growth. He also led the addition of services including soil science, environmental consulting, and natural capital integration, advancing the speed and quality a functioning environment can be returned after construction.
Mr. Gillan and his partners were regional leaders in specialized land development, forensic engineering, and repair design. Using their team’s innovation and knowledge, they recognized the hidden natural capital potential associated with legacy mining properties. They developed the former mines into thriving, biodiverse ecosystems integrated with housing developments, green infrastructure storm water management and flood mitigation, in concert with recreation.
Recognizing the significant energy savings a newly discovered thermodynamic process could bring to the world, Mr. Gillan and his partners invented a multi-patented air conditioner that minimized traditional air conditioning systems’ energy use to one tenth. They achieved international distribution on six continents and were awarded the prestigious R&D 100 award.
Mr. Gillan received his BS in Engineering from the University of Colorado.
Co-Founder, Principal Scientist
Aaron DeJoia is a master at designing practical natural capital solutions for difficult environmental problems in the areas of soil science, agronomy, oil and gas reclamation, remediation, and wastewater management. He has two decades of international experience that includes soil fertility, water chemistry, nutrient management, water, soil, and plant interface interactions, reclamation of disturbed lands, natural gas produced water management, agronomy, salinity transport permitting, remote sensing and permitting.
Successful natural capital related projects include produced water managed irrigation systems, crop and nutrient management plans, facility water management strategies to manage nutrient and salinity impacts, land application of biosolids, wastewater land application, nutrient cycling, and environmental soil chemistry including remediation of salinity impacted crop land, and the beneficial reuse of high nutrient wastewater and low irrigation quality water.
Mr. DeJoia is a board certified Professional Soil Scientist, Professional Agronomist, as well as a Certified Crop Advisor. He is a published author of many technical articles, technical speaker, peer reviewer, expert witness and served on the Board of Directors for the Soil Science Society. He obtained his BS and MS from Kansas State University.
Mr. DeJoia enjoys outdoor activities with his family including skiing, hiking and playing sports. Being from a small farming town in Kansas Aaron loves and respects the country life and agricultural community.
Associate, Contaminant Hydrogeologist
Stephen Livingstone possesses deep expertise in hydrogeological studies, environmental assessments, fate and transport contaminant evaluations, computer modeling, complex site remediation, site specific risk assessments, brownfield redevelopment, litigation support, strategic environmental policy and management systems. Having served both industry and government for over 30 years, he is exceptional at bringing innovative and novel approaches to solve some of the most difficult environmental and hydrogeological challenges.
Mr. Livingstone has managed high profile and complex sites for the military, chemical storage facilities, factories, brownfield sites, railway yards, landfills and mines. His hazardous waste experience includes PHCs, metals, PAHs, radiological impacts (uranium), off-site chlorinated solvent plumes (TCE, PCE, VC and 1-4 dioxane) and “cancer cluster” sites. Mr. Livingstone has worked on numerous DNAPL and LNAPL contaminated sites from site characterization, plume stability to pilot scale testing and implementation of remedial systems including insitu bioaugmentation. Many of the sites required advanced contaminant groundwater flow and transport interpretations and modeling.
He has worked in over two dozen countries around the world, and he has developed several strategic policy and guidance programs on behalf of several Federal government departments. Mr. Livingstone is a licensed member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut and Professional Geoscientist in Ontario and Professional Association of Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia.
Associate, Natural Capital Efficiency
Mr. Bijkerk has over two decades of leadership in ecologic sustainability in both large scale manufacturing and energy efficient product innovation. He analyzes the entire natural capital supply chain to make improvements from raw material sourcing to consumer product use and recycling. He is leading the industry at working toward a circular economy in the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) market sector.
Mr. Bijkerk has in depth knowledge of manufacturing, thermodynamics and energy technology developments. He makes substantial impact by bringing a combination of technical, financial, commercial and political aspects to projects and initiatives he and his team take on. Technical innovations that Mr. Bijkerk has initiated include a unique hybrid heat pump, micro combined heating and power appliance (u-CHP), floor standing boilers, solar energy and an overall energy management system for domestic use. He has also been involved in the adjustment of standards and electricity law.
Mr. Bijkerk has a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Energy from the HAN University. His outside interests include touring the world with his family, home building, catamaran sailing, and radio controlled ship modelling. He is fluent in Dutch and English and speaks German.
